Diagnostics

Comprehensive results for greater clarity

Our diagnostic service for you

The Center for Outpatient Oncology offers you comprehensive diagnostics in the field of tumor diseases. All relevant examinations for pre- and post-treatment as well as monitoring can be performed in our center.

This allows us to select the necessary and most appropriate examination from our diagnostic spectrum to help you.

Pre- and post-care of tumor diseases

In cooperation with your primary care physician and other specialists, we are glad to coordinate and perform the necessary preventive and post-care examinations tailored to your individual situation. For this purpose, we also cooperate with other centers. This enables us to provide you with continuous care – from early detection to disease management.

In cooperation with your primary care physician the Center for Outpatient Oncology Tübingen performes pre- and post-care examinations for tumor diseases.

Sonography

The high-resolution ultrasound devices of the Center for Outpatient Oncology Tübingen detect pathological changes and are an important part of tumor diagnostics.

Using our high-resolution ultrasound equipment, we can visualize the internal organs and body cavities and detect, classify and monitor pathological changes as they progress. For this purpose, we perform B-scan sonographies and doppler and duplex sonographic examinations with specialized ultrasound probes. Ultrasound diagnostics allow us to obtain tissue samples from many organs.

Because of their rapid availability and the low impact they place on our patients, sonographies are an important and frequently used component of our diagnostics.

  • Soft tissue
  • Salivary and thyroid glands
  • Lymph nodes
  • Breast tissue
  • Lungs
  • Abdominal cavity with abdominal organs
  • Liver and spleen
  • Gall bladder and bile ducts
  • Pancreas
  • Intestine
  • Abdominal lymph nodes
  • Retroperitoneum
  • Kidneys and adrenal glands
  • Urinary bladder
  • Male and female reproductive organs
  • Blood vessels including aorta and pelvic vessels

Thyroid diagnostics

If thyroid cancer is suspected, we can use a variety of tests to determine whether it is really a tumor, and if so, what type of tumor it is and how far the disease has progressed.

  • Thyroid laboratory including special values such as antibodies and tumor markers
  • Parathyroid laboratory including calcium, phosphate and parathormone
  • High-resolution ultrasound (sonography) including color doppler and elastography
  • Thyroid nodule puncture

For more extensive examinations, such as thyroid scintigraphy, we collaborate with diagnostic institutes such as the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of Tübingen.

We offer advanced precision diagnostics and follow-up control, as well as outpatient pharmacotherapy for benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid gland, especially tumor diseases.

The Center for Outpatient Oncology Tübingen offers the diagnostic and medicinal treatment of thyroid tumors.

Extraction and analysis of tissue samples from body fluids and organs

The Center for Outpatient Oncology Tübingen offers tumor diagnostics from different tissue samples.

Prior to any statements about the therapy or prognosis of diseases, especially tumor diseases, in most cases it is necessary to examine the tissue by taking tissue samples.
At the Center for Outpatient Oncology, we offer the extraction of tissue samples. We also provide cytological or histopathological examination of the tissue samples and advanced high-precision diagnostics. The goal is to analyze the molecular genetic profile of the tissue in order to find the most appropriate, personalized and precise treatment options for your disease.

A bone marrow puncture and biopsy is an examination in which, after local anesthesia and, if necessary, the administration of sedating drugs, bone marrow blood containing the precursor cells of hematopoiesis and a small cylinder of tissue is safely and quickly extracted under sterile conditions and circulatory monitoring. This is usually performed from the bone of the posterior iliac crest.

Advanced diagnostics such as cytomorphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, FISH and molecular genetic studies with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) are usually performed on these samples. The tissue sample is examined at a cellular level (histopathology with immunohistochemistry).

The goal is to be able to diagnose and classify a blood or bone marrow disease as quickly and accurately as possible in the case of blood count changes. Bone tissue can also be analyzed in this way. This is a prerequisite for the best possible therapy.

Bone marrow puncture can be performed safely and quickly on our premises.

Biopsies and punctures are methods of extracting body tissue for diagnostic purposes. This can often be done through fine needle punctures, where tissue components or fluid are aspirated. A punch biopsy can also be performed using special cannulas. In certain cases, intervention by surgical colleagues is useful and necessary.

In addition to blood, other body fluids, such as fluid in the abdomen (ascites), fluid in the pleura (pleural effusion), or cerebrospinal fluid, can be removed from the body for examination (diagnostic) or to relieve strain on the body (therapeutic).

In a diagnostic puncture, a very thin hollow needle is used to remove fluid under sterile conditions after local anesthesia. Therapeutic puncture uses hollow plastic catheters through which body fluids can be extracted.

As with blood, a wide range of diagnostic laboratory tests can be performed on the fluids. These include the determination of the number and type of cells (cytology and cytochemistry), the analysis of proteins and tumor markers, as well as highly sensitive methods such as the analysis of cell-free tumor DNA (liquid biopsy) and modern sequencing methods for the precise characterization of blood or tumor diseases.

Lymph node punctures allow us to remove cellular components (cytology) and/or tissue samples, usually under ultrasound guidance, using special cannulas, under sterile conditions and after local anesthesia. These are then examined by a pathologist. In addition, they can be further characterized by our cooperation partners using high-precision methods such as NGS sequencing of DNA and RNA.

This allows us to determine the cause of a disease with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, as part of personalized medicine and precision oncology, we can plan and implement an individualized therapy specific to the tumor.

Liver puncture allows us to extract tissue samples using special cannulas through the skin of the abdomen or lower right chest under ultrasound guidance, sterile conditions, and local anesthesia. These are then examined by a pathologist. They can be further characterized by our cooperation partners using high-precision methods such as NGS sequencing of DNA and RNA.

This allows us to determine the cause of a disease with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, as part of personalized medicine and precision oncology, we can plan and implement an individualized therapy specific to the tumor.

Laboratory diagnostics

We offer a wide range of routine and special laboratory tests and can provide you with results quickly – usually the same day. We have an on-site hematology laboratory for immediate blood count measurements, as well as laboratory cooperations that save you long routes in order to obtain accurate, reliable diagnoses as quickly as possible.

We can provide and discuss with you within minutes a complete (differencial) blood count with our automated blood count machine here on site.

By means of our laboratory association in Reutlingen and our cooperation partner MVZ Laboratory Ravensburg/Labor Dr. Gärtner, we are able to obtain and evaluate the results of all routine blood tests and many other special tests within a short period of time in order to manage your diagnostics and therapy in the best possible way.

Cooperating with other laboratories and facilities, we can perform any additional blood tests that may be appropriate for your personal medical situation.

The Center for Outpatient Oncology Tübingen offers numerous test options and provides quick results.
